SHU UEMURA (Shu Uemura)

Founder Shu Uemura had an interest in hair styling from an early age, and after that, he decided to pursue a career as a makeup artist and started studying makeup at the Tokyo Beauty Academy. It is said that he was the only male student in a classroom of 130 girls. After that, Shu Uemura did not stop there and left Japan in the late 1950s to learn more about his makeup techniques and worked as a makeup artist in Hollywood. Then, an opportunity came by chance, and it was in the 1962 movie 'My Geisha' that the makeup artist in charge vacated his seat because he was sick. Shu Uemura takes the place and completely transforms a white actress into a Japanese woman and gets a positive response from the film director and staff. After that, she became a favorite makeup artist in Hollywood.

Returning to Japan in 1964, he opened a makeup school to teach makeup techniques learned in Hollywood, and in 1967 founded a cosmetics company, Shu Uemura.
